CMS Color Rendering: From Real World to Monitor
In automotive safety, inaccurate color reproduction can lead to hazardous driving decisions.
As CMS gradually supplements conventional rearview mirrors, the core challenge lies in aligning displayed visuals with real-world scenery. Precise color rendering therefore serves as an indispensable safety benchmark.
What is CMS Color Rendering?
CMS color rendering refers to the system’s ability to faithfully reproduce real-world colors from camera to display. Accurate color rendering helps ensure reliable recognition of traffic lights, road signs, and vehicle lamps.
The ISO 16505 Benchmark
According to ISO 16505, a standard color chart is used to evaluate the color renderding performance of a Camera Monitor System (CMS).
The chart includes eight reference colors: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Cyan, Magenta, Black, and White.
Under this global standard, CMS color rendering is rigorously evaluated through three key criteria:
● Hue Angle Tolerances: Within the CIE 1976 u',v' chromaticity diagram, the hue angle of each reproduced chart patch must remain strictly within its specified compliance range.
● Chromatic Distance Limits: To ensure absolute distinguishability from white, the chromatic distance from the white patch for these reference colors must be no less than 0.02.
● Signal Lamp Recognition: For vehicle signal lamps, the system must guarantee that amber lamps are uniquely recognized as amber, blue as blue, and red as red.
Practical Testing Workflow
In practical testing, images of the standard color chart displayed on the CMS monitor are captured to extract the precise chromaticity coordinates of each color patch.
Based on the coordinate differences between the target patches and the reference white patch , the relative hue angles are calculated using quadrant-specific arctangent calculations. From there, thechromatic distances from the white patch are derived. Finally, these results are benchmarked against ISO 16505 criteria to deliver a quantitative compliance evaluation.
